Gout is a medical condition on which a part or several parts of your body are swollen or have been affected by arthritis . Besides being swollen, it can also show a bright tinge of red, as well as a burning sensation on the affected part . Big toes are most commonly affected by gout, but it can affect other parts of the body (mostly joints) as well .
High uric acid levels are mainly the cause of gout, as this crystallizes the blood on the affected part, forming a huge, reddish bump on the affected area. The high levels of uric acid are caused by doing the following:
- Alcoholism, or addiction to alcoholic beverages
- Consuming red meat and oily foods
- Dehydration
- Taking medications that might affect / stimulate the uric acid levels
- Hereditary, or by race (The British and Black Americans are mostly affected by gout)
Should you experience a hot and itchy sensation on the affected part, you should seek help from a doctor . It is best to consult a rheumatologist, as they are knowledgeable about gout and arthritis, which is the main cause of gout . However, in the case that you don’t have easy access to a doctor, or a hospital, you should do these for first-aid :
- Make sure that the swollen joint is aptly raised. Have the joint raised to at least chest level.
- An ice pack can help you cool down the hot and itchy sensation of the affected area . It also keeps the affected area from swelling even more.
- Don’t let yourself get dehydrated . It is important that you drink 8 glasses per day so that you won’t get dehydrated immediately.
- Cherry juice is very effective in curing gout . Drinking cherry juice can reduce the severity and frequency of gout attacks.
- If you have any medications from your doctor for arthritis available, they will work as gout treatment .
Following these tips can cure your gout disease in a week or two . If symptoms still persist, you should immediately seek help, as this might be more complicated . Remember not to neglect this, as failure to immediately address this condition can lead to even more problems in the future . If treated sooner or later, it might require surgery and several operations before it can be treated, so be wise and have it treated as soon as possible .
